Fellowship Program 2024 – 2025

The ICO-World Glaucoma Association Three Month Fellowship Program is organized to help promising young ophthalmologists from developing countries improve their practical skills and broaden their perspectives of ophthalmology and glaucoma.

WGA remains committed to giving young ophthalmologists from Sub-Saharan Africa the opportunity to expand knowledge and skills in several subspecialties in ophthalmology. That is why we continued with the program for the 11th World Glaucoma Congress. We are proud to introduce the 2024 – 2025 Fellows to you, together with a testimonial about their experience.

The 2024 - 2025 ICO-WGA Fellows.

The WGA has supported 29 fellows from 15 countries in Africa since 2017.

Specialist at Kayseri State Hospital in Turkiye, Fellow of the International Council of Ophthalmology.

I had joined Prof Mansouri’s outpatient clinic and I witnessed over 1000 patient examination since the first day. After every relevant patient, he explained key points of management and important areas.

In addition, I observed and assisted glaucoma surgeries such as deep sclerectomy, Kahook dual blade goniotomiy, Clearpath, Miniject, iStent and XEN implantations, needling, bleb revision and phacoemulsification surgeries. Also, I had was included in two research projects on glaucoma. Additionally, I experienced with laser treatments like SLT, peripheral iridotomy, goniopuncture and capsulotomy.

I learned amazing innovations, new and scientific approaches and advanced techniques. With all this experience I will be available to take care of glaucoma patients with confidence.

Specialist at Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja in Kogi State, Fellow of the International Council of Ophthalmology.

I participated in the routine running of the clinic in the morning and afternoon sessions. I attended to all the patients assigned to me; taking history about their condition and thoroughly examining their eyes to clinch a diagnosis, requesting for investigations where necessary to confirm diagnosis and stage the severity of glaucoma. Some of the cases I have managed within this period are:

  • Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG)
  • Chronic angle closure glaucoma
  • Acute angle closure glaucoma
  • Juvenile open angle glaucoma (JOAG)
  • Normal tension glaucoma (NTG)
  • Ocular hypertension (OHT)
  • Lens-induced glaucoma
  • Congenital glaucoma

Secondary glaucoma following trauma, corneal transplant, retinal detachment, surgery, retinopathy of prematurity, uveitis, thyroid eye disease, Sturge Weber syndrome.
Procedure Observations: Transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (TSCP), YAG peripheral iridotomy (YAG PI), Trabeculectomy, Combined Phacoemulsification with Trabeculectomy (phacotrab), Tube surgery with Ahmed tube.
